The best at-home gel nail kits make it easy to get salon-quality results without salon-level prices. With the right tools and a little practice, anyone can achieve a glossy, long-lasting manicure that holds up for up to two—sometimes even three—weeks. Most kits include everything you need to cure from the comfort of your home, like an LED lamp, nail prep tools, gel polish, and base coats and topcoats. Plus, the latest innovations even offer peel-off base coats or one-step polish formulas for easier application and removal.

For starters, “people should look for kits that match their skill level,” says Tom Bachik, a nail artist based in Los Angeles, New York City, and Paris. “Some gel kits are three-step, including a base coat, color, and top coat, while others are only two- or even one-step, meaning there is no base coat and the whole process is easier.” If you're new to gel, a simple system is a great place to start. For seasoned DIYers, a more advanced kit can offer longer wear and more polish options.

With consistent use and proper technique, especially when it comes to curing and removal, at-home gel kits can deliver pro-level shine, durability, and satisfaction. Whether you’re squeezing in a mani during your lunch break or you love switching up your nail look often, there’s a kit that fits your lifestyle.

Why it’s worth it: If speed is the name of your game, the star of Le Mini Macaron’s Gel Nail Polish Kit is a teeny-tiny LED lamp shaped like (you guessed it) a macaron that cures your polish in just 30 seconds per finger. Compact enough to stash in your bag or leave on your desk, it's perfect for quick touch-ups when one nail mysteriously chips faster than the rest (you know the one). Paired with the included three-in-one gel formula (a base, color, and top coat in one handy swipe), this kit delivers the glossiest, salon-like shine with ease. While our tester found the polish didn’t last as long as hoped, its fool-proof application completely made up for it—touching up a chipped nail was quick and effortless. The lamp works for pedicures too; all you have to do is flip the magnetic top around.

“This was my first foray into at-home gel polish, and I was genuinely surprised by how easy Le Mini Macaron was to use—no base coat, no top coat, and I could even plug the USB lamp into my laptop. As someone who can’t really shape my nails to save my life, I’m not giving up salon visits just yet, but I loved how travel-friendly and fuss-free this kit was. It did start chipping after a few days, but honestly, as a mom of two who’s constantly doing dishes, I’m extremely tough on my nails, so I still think it’s pretty impressive.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

“I’m by no means great at painting my nails, gel or not, but I was pleasantly surprised by how easy all of the steps (base, polish, and topcoat) were. And can we talk about how gorgeous this blue (Tidal Wave) is? I may’ve gone a little overboard with curing (I’m constantly opening packages, vigorously scrubbing my scalp in the shower, and generally not careful with my nails), but I think it was the right move because my nails had minimal chipping a week later—just some small missing areas that, from a distance, you can barely clock. While I still relish a salon mani (I just don’t have the budget to treat myself to them very often!), this is a very welcome alternative—even if my handiwork is very subpar to that of a pro." —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai using the Olive & June Gel Mani System Set

Why it’s worth it: Olive & June’s The Gel Mani System is made for anyone who wants their polish to go the distance. The brand promises up to 21 days of wear, which beats out most other at-home kits in the longevity department. It comes with everything you need for a gel mani at home: a pro-grade LED lamp, remover, cuticle tools, base and top coats, and more. (No polish included in this kit so that you can pick your perfect shades, like its Summer Brights collection, separately.) You’ll also receive the brand’s Peelable Base Coat, a genius option for those who love gel shine but dislike the removal process. Simply peel it off when you’re ready to switch up your look, without the need to soak or scrape it off.

However, it takes a bit of practice, and prep is critical: You have to make sure your cuticles are gone and nails perfectly buffed—and as our testers found, thin coats are critical. However, “even in my less-than-perfect first attempts, I found the kit to be easy to use and loved the results,” says content director Kara McGrath. "The polish is very shiny and self-levels, so if I don’t paint it on completely evenly, it all works out once the curing happens—basically, it reduces the chances that I end up with the telltale “bubble” look of an amateur gel manicure.

“I love Olive & June's regular nail polishes, which is great because I love to DIY my nails. Unfortunately that meant that I went into this with a lot of false confidence. I found the gel a little tricky to work with—it was thicker than traditional polish, which made it extremely easy to over-apply—and the process, with curing every time after applying base coat, each of the two layers, and topcoat, was longer than I expected. I did love the result, although it came out a little bubbled, and appreciated that my nails held up through two weeks of bathing my toddler, cooking, and swimming.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks of doing gel nails at home?

Doing gel nails at home can be fun and cost-effective, but there are a few important risks to consider. “The biggest risks are over-curing or under-curing the gel with the UV light, which can lead to damage or allergic reactions, and improper removal, which can weaken or peel the natural nail,” says Gerstein. She also notes that “the removal process and tools can cause a ton of damage if not used safely.” To minimize risk, it’s essential to follow instructions closely, use high-quality products, and avoid picking or peeling unless the product has a specific peel-off formulation. Taking breaks between manis, using a nail strengthener when you need it, and protecting your hands during curing can also help keep nails healthy.

What is the downside of having gel nails?

While gel nails deliver long-lasting shine and a chip-resistant finish worthy of any nail salon, they do come with some trade-offs, whether you're getting them professionally done or attempting at-home manicures. “They can be drying or damaging to the natural nail if not applied or removed properly,” says Gerstein. Skipping breaks between manicures can lead to thinning or brittle nails over time. “The constant on and off can be the biggest issue,” she adds. That said, with proper application, gentle removal, and the occasional breather, you can enjoy gel polish (salon or DIY) without compromising your nail health.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best at-home gel nail kits, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

The best scalp serums for hair growth might sound too good to be true. Formulated to create a healthier environment for strands to grow, these lightweight treatments are meant to reduce inflammation, balance oil production, and support follicle function over time. But, before we dive in, it's worth managing expectations: If you're experiencing thinning hair and active hair loss, it's important to consult your dermatologist. There could be any number of contributing factors—hormonal imbalances, genetics, underlying health conditions, and recurring tension, to name a few—that a topical simply can't fix.

With that said, if you have modest goals of encouraging hair growth and thickness, hair-growth serums can help, and we spoke with dermatologists to put their favorite ones to the test. Ahead, find the scalp serums that make hair feel fuller, promote hair growth, minimize shedding, and improve overall scalp health.

Why it’s worth it: If your hair goals include less shedding and more fullness, Nécessaire The Scalp Serum might be worth adding to your routine. This daily, lightweight scalp treatment is designed to create a healthier scalp environment that supports thicker-looking hair over time. Central to the formula is Capixyl, which combines red clover extract with acetyl tetrapeptide-3. “There are some small-scale studies comparing it with minoxidil that show it has similar results in terms of boosting hair growth,” says Chicago-based dermatologist Omer Ibrahim, MD. (Minoxidil is a widely used topical treatment that helps extend the hair’s growth phase by increasing blood flow to the follicles.) “Capixyl helps reduce inflammation and shedding while stimulating hair proliferation,” he adds. The formula also includes niacinamide, which “can help support hair health by slowing shedding and providing antioxidant protection,” he says. And, if you have a sensitive scalp, it’s also been recognized by the National Eczema Association as proof of just how gentle and skin-friendly the formula is.

“Working it into my hair-care routine was easy. The formula goes on super wet and dries really quickly. It played well with my other products—leave-in conditioners, curl creams, dry shampoo, too. I applied it to wet hair on washdays and dry hair the rest of the week. It didn’t leave a trace in either situation. Other than sticking to the recommended ‘half pipette’ amount of product, my application technique was fairly haphazard. I would part my hair with my fingers and use the dropper to apply the serum directly to my scalp in different sections, then massage it in. I started seeing results pretty quickly. After about a month, my hair was already looking much shinier and bouncier, if not exponentially thicker.” —Kara McGrath, content director

Kara has type 2 wavy hair, thinning hair, and has been using Nécessaire The Scalp Serum for five months.

How the brand tested this product’s efficacy

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Nécessaire says you’ll start seeing results from The Scalp Serum after 90 days, which lines up with the average eight-to-12-week hair growth cycle. And according to the brand’s own clinical data, 90% of people saw thicker hair and 94% saw fuller hair after using the serum (along with its shampoo and conditioner) for three months. The formula takes a skin-care-first approach “to treat scalp with the same care and advanced ingredients as facial skin,” says Brattleboro, Vermont-based cosmetic chemist Sherry Backman.

Hyaluronic acid counteracts dryness and itchy scalp, which can reduce the kind of low-grade inflammation that silently disrupts healthy growth. capixyl—a blend of a peptide and red clover extract—helps anchor hair more securely and blocks DHT, the hormone that causes follicles to shrink and shed. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, calms irritation, reduces oxidative stress, and helps prevent DHT-triggered hair-shedding signals. “All of these effects support healthier follicles and steady growth,” says Backman.

    Jessica Cruel

Why it’s worth it: Beyoncé’s editor-loved Cécred Restoring Hair & Edge Drops keep selling out, and our testers understand why. This fast-absorbing, non-greasy serum is designed to help strengthen thinning areas and boost hair density, especially around the hairline. According to Dr. Ibrahim, “of the featured ingredients, peptides have the most promising evidence to help stimulate hair growth, but it depends on what kind of peptides are used.” Brattleboro, Vermont-based cosmetic chemist Sherry Backman agrees, noting that the real heavy hitters in this formula are the peptides, “which can influence follicular signaling, anagen phase duration, and follicle anchoring.” She adds that some of the biomimetic peptides in this product “may even help ‘wake up’ dormant stem cells in the follicle,” potentially encouraging thicker, denser hair over time.

While biotin and keratin are unlikely to regrow hair when applied topically, they can “help reinforce the hair shaft and reduce breakage,” which can improve the look of fullness, says Backman. The formula also includes ginger extract and fermented rice proteins—ingredients with early, though limited, evidence suggesting they may support scalp health. Add in a subtle sandalwood-musk scent and a cooling feel from peppermint oil, and you’ve got a routine-worthy favorite.

“A year ago I started to notice how my edges seemed to snap with even the slightest slick back. So, I put away the edge brush and picked up these Cécred Restoring Hair & Edge Drops. I'm on my second bottle! It feels like a serum, not so watery that my natural hair reverts but not too oily either. The smell is divine and after months of using it, I feel my hairline has become more resilient.” —Jessica Cruel, editor in chief

Jessica has type 4B hair, an itchy scalp with hair breakage, and has been using Cécred Restoring Hair & Edge Drops at least five days a week for several months.

How the brand tested this product’s efficacy

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Cécred conducted a 16-week third-party study on participants with visibly thinning edges. The results showed up to a 1.5x improvement in hair density when used daily, along with noticeable improvements in hair texture and scalp health. It also showed that 84% of participants agreed they saw their edges and hairline return, 84% reported visibly improved hair density, and 84% noticed better overall scalp and hair health. While individual results may vary, the brand’s clinical testing suggests consistent use can lead to stronger, fuller-looking edges over time.

In clinical and placebo-controlled studies, 93% of users reported reduced shedding, 90% noticed an improvement in the appearance of their hair, and 83% stated that their strands felt stronger and more resilient. Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best ingredient for hair regrowth?

The best ingredient for hair regrowth is minoxidil, which dermatologist Dr. Ibrahim calls “the gold standard for hair regrowth.” It's FDA-approved and works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and extending the growth phase. “But it can be a little harsh and lead to dry scalps,” he adds, which is why oral minoxidil has been gaining popularity as a gentler alternative.

You can read more about minoxidil in our reporting on what dermatologists say you can really expect from the hair loss treatment here.

For those seeking alternative options, Dr. Ibrahim notes that ingredients such as caffeine, peptides, niacinamide, ginseng extract, and rosemary oil show promise in reducing shedding to make hair look fuller. He also mentions that naturally sourced DHT blockers, such as saw palmetto, could be helpful for hair loss caused by hormonal factors.

How long does it take to see results from a scalp serum?

Most hair products take time to deliver noticeable results, and scalp serums are no exception. “Even with minoxidil, it usually takes three to six months to see any visible hair growth,” says Dr. Ibrahim. “For scalp serums without minoxidil, I recommend using them for at least six months.” Since hair grows in cycles, visible improvements in density won’t happen overnight. Many of these hair products work gradually by reducing shedding and improving overall scalp health first. The key is consistency: apply regularly and give your follicles the time they need to respond.

Are there any risks to scalp serums?

Scalp serums are generally safe; however, certain ingredients may cause irritation, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin or pre-existing scalp conditions. “Stimulating actives like caffeine, menthol, essential oils (e.g., rosemary, peppermint), or even niacinamide can cause irritation, redness, or itching in sensitive individuals,” says Backman. She also notes that overusing DHT-blocking botanicals may impact hormone-sensitive users. To minimize risks, it’s best to patch test first and avoid applying serums to broken or inflamed skin. Those with scalp eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis should check with a dermatologist before using formulas with strong stimulants.

For our list of the best scalp serums for hair growth, we considered each product's performance across the following categories: product ingredients, packaging, fragrance, texture, and efficacy. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. For this piece, our editorial testers are those who are specifically looking for overall fullness and hair thickening, and tested the products for a minimum of four months.

Summer is slipping away so fast, and if you're feeling a little bored with your regular nail color rotation, get in line! August can sometimes feel like a transitional period for all things beauty, but Selena Gomez has the perfect nail polish shade to get you through this bridge period in summer-to-fall style.

Gomez has been wearing a simple, lovely rosy mauve nail color on the regular lately, perhaps because it feels like such a natural fit for the warm, cozy vibes of the new Rare Beauty fragrance, the aptly named Rare. The color popped up in a recent Instagram photo dump from a friend's wedding; you have to scroll all the way to the end to see it, but it's worth it!

The nail color, which Gomez wore to the wedding alongside a red halter gown and matching bright red lip, is a gorgeous, earthy blend of mauve, beige, and brown tones. It's not quite pink, per se, but more of a brownish-rose shade that feels both neutral and glamorous at the same time—with a bit of throwback energy reminiscent of the popular nail polishes of the ‘80s and early ’90s. She wore it on short nails filed into a gentle squoval shape for an easy elegance that worked well at a formal wedding event, but would work just as well for everyday wear too.

I don't know about you, but when I saw Gomez's nail color, I instantly thought of her pal Taylor Swift's song “August.” It conjures up visions of salt air and the rust on your door, as Swift sings, or watching the sun set on the beach. The rosy polish feels softly summery, but could easily transition to fall with the addition of a cozy cashmere sweater or your favorite leather jacket… and maybe a pumpkin spice latte. 10 Best Eye-Tightening Creams in 2025, Tested & Reviewed

The best eye-tightening creams have become viral sensations, racking up millions of views (and buys) due to their visibly firming results. Undereyes seemingly go from puffy to smooth in the blink of an eye—albeit temporarily. Although they may seem gimmicky, many eye-tightening creams come highly recommended by board-certified dermatologists. Sure, their effects are short-lived, but they work. They even benefit the delicate, ultra-thin skin around your eyes over time with the help of collagen-boosting ingredients, like peptides, says Lindsey Zubritsky, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

    Our Top Eye-Tightening Creams

    • Best Overall: SkinCeuticals A.G.E Advanced Eye, $125
    • Best Firming: Dr. Loretta Tightening Eye Gel, $65
    • Best Drugstore: RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream, $30

    • Best Fast-Acting: Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firmx Eye, $38
    • Best Tinted: Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35, $79

Of course, these eye-tightening creams are not bottled-up versions of IPL treatments or a blepharoplasty (eye lift), but they truly do the trick to help tighten, plump, and firm the skin around your eyes in a pain-free pinch. If one of your skin-care goals is to minimize the appearance of dark circles, offset sagging, smooth eye wrinkles, or all of the above, an eye cream—especially one with firming benefits—should be the first thing you add for undereyes that look more awake, and an overall more energized complexion.

Why it’s worth it: Allure’s best eye cream lists consistently include the SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Advanced Eye because it’s a past Best of Beauty winner, and many dermatologists swear by it. According to Kunal Malik, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, this eye treatment combines immediate visible improvements with long-term benefits by addressing the advanced glycation end-products (a.k.a. A.G.E.), which naturally develop and build up in our bodies as we age and cause our skin to sag. A.G.E. Advanced Eye’s potent blend of peptides, in particular, helps reverse them by improving firmness, tightness, and elasticity.

This undereye-tightening cream is also spiked with proxylane, blueberry extract, and flavonoids to help decrease the appearance of crow’s feet, as Lauren Penzi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, has told Allure. "With regular use, patients have definitely noticed a decrease in the appearance of fine lines around the eyes,” she added.

Tap it around the circumference of each eye, including your upper eyelid, to harness the benefits of tetrapeptide-5 and antioxidant-rich nannochloropsis oculata extract (a form of microalgae). Both help deflate puffiness, restore tautness, and kick-start collagen production for a smoother, more resilient eye area.

He points to its inclusion of gentle retinol, which helps promote collagen production, boost firmness, and reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. (Just be sure to wear sunscreen to avoid irritation, as retinoids can increase sun sensitivity.) It also allows this incredibly lightweight formula to help diminish discoloration over time, adds David Li, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Boston.

“RoC's eye cream has been a tried-and-true formula for many years now. I'm probably aging myself by linking to this review I wrote in 2021, but with the added years (I'm 32 now), my concerns about volume loss and creasing around the eyes are even more prevalent, so RoC's Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream has made its way back into my nighttime rotation. After all, not much can beat retinol in terms of wrinkle-reducing efficacy. I've never had any sensitivity using it either, perhaps due to the fact that irritating-soothing glycerin is one of the top ingredients. All in all, this is a very affordable treatment that outperforms many pricier creams: ” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

It functions like a transparent clay mask, thanks to silicates extracted from natural clays. As it dries down, the gel formula absorbs moisture and gently pulls the delicate skin in the undereye area, making it feel tight—just like your favorite rinse-off mask—and instantly appear firmer, as cosmetic chemist Javon Ford previously shared with Allure. If you're not yet clued into retinaldehyde (or retinal for short), allow Noah Levit, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut, to explain further. “Retinal and retinol are both vitamin A derivatives, but retinal is one step closer to retinoic acid—the active form your skin uses. That means it works faster and is typically more potent than retinol,” Dr. Levit previously told us. Frequently Asked Questions

    Does eye-tightening cream work?

Surprisingly, yes, but some have temporary skin-smoothing effects while others minimize the look of fine lines, sagging, and wrinkles over time with consistent use. Certain skin-care ingredients, like silicates, can have an instantly tightening effect on the under-eye area, as Lindsey Zubritsky, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, mentions to Allure. Another way they work their magic is by adding hydration to the eye area. "When the skin is more visibly hydrated, it looks tighter," Dr. Lolis explains.

Collagen-stimulating ingredients, such as peptides, retinol, and vitamin C, help firm and tighten the delicate skin around your eyes, too, with consistent use. Keep in mind that eye-tightening creams won’t give you the same undereyes you had the day you were born, though. They can, however, effectively help diminish the appearance of fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness under your eyes.

    How to apply eye cream

Dermatologists typically recommend gently tapping eye cream onto your eye area with your ring finger. It places the least amount of pressure on the delicate skin and is less likely to tug at it. Dr. Gohara says to "Apply along the orbital bone, not too close to the lash line." You can also "use a chilled roller or gua sha [with your eye cream] for a spa-like boost," she suggests as an optional upgrade.

Do you use eye cream or serum first?

Serum should be applied before eye cream. A general guideline experts suggest: Layer your skin-care products from thinnest to thickest consistency.

    When to apply eye cream

Firming eye cream can be a part of your morning and nighttime skin-care routines. The only caveat: Eye creams formulated with retinol should only be used at night. (In the morning, you can reach for an eye cream with SPF.)

What in-office treatments are available for more intensive eye tightening?

We'll let the pros take it from here: Dr. Gohara recommends radiofrequency microneedling (like Morpheus8), which is her "go-to for boosting collagen and elastin deep in the dermis." If you're looking for a non-invasive treatment (microneedling is considered minimally invasive, by the way), "Ultrasound-based devices like Ultherapy precisely target deeper layers to contour and tighten for a more lifted look," Dr. Gohara adds. But, even with professional treatments, you shouldn't negate your topicals. The strongest, most results-driven combination is always in-office treatments coupled with consistent at-home care.

"Off the bat, I loved that I could even find a color match with this concealer. But just as good as that was the lightweight consistency, which somehow packed a ton of coverage without ever feeling heavy or cakey. A little went a long way, too, with a drop covering my undereyes, discoloration on my chin, and redness around my nose. The finish was also dewy, but natural—so much so that I could wear it without having to blend it in with foundation." —Deanna Pai, contributing editor

Why it’s worth it: The undereye area is usually the first place to show signs of aging or just general exhaustion, which is why having a concealer made specifically for that delicate skin really makes a difference. Maybelline New York’s Instant Age Rewind Concealer is a total OG in the drugstore world and wins major points for its ability to hydrate, cover, and correct all at once. The formula is packed with ingredients like goji berry extract and haloxyl, which offer antioxidant benefits for the skin to help visibly brighten dark circles over time. The sponge-tip applicator makes application super easy and mess-free, and helps you control how much product you use.

NYC-based makeup artist Karol Rodriguez is also a fan of this concealer, saying, “The shade range is inclusive, and they have color correctors for all skin tones in the same formula, which takes out the guessing game if you have discoloration.” Pro tip: Go one shade lighter to instantly brighten and lift your undereye area.

“Listen: Is this the only concealer I use? No. But is it very dependable, cheap, and very popular for a reason? Heck yes. The coverage is true-medium, which is what I always go for, and buildable as needed. It disguises my faint half-circles and redness with just one layer, and for any dark spots, I dab on a thin second layer and let it sit for a while before very gently blending it in. And the sponge tip…she's an icon. I love that it spreads out the product evenly straight out of the tube because it makes the rest of the blending process that much more seamless. I tend to add concealer all along the center of my face from forehead to nose to chin, and find that I don't need foundation afterwards because I'm, well, covered.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: Don’t let the thick texture of E.L.F. Cosmetics’ 16HR Camo Concealer intimidate you. It goes on surprisingly smoothly, feels like nothing on the skin, and never looks heavy or cakey. One swipe is enough to cover anything from dark undereyes to melasma (a little goes a long way), but it also layers well to disguise red, swollen blemishes. Our editors are impressed by how well it held up through a full day without letting up on coverage. The only catch is that it dries fast once it hits your skin, so you’ll want to blend quickly before it sets.

"Creamy, concealing, and consistent is how I’d describe E.L.F.’s 16 HR Camo Concealer. And once it’s blended, it doesn’t budge. It comes in so many shades (20!)—I use Light Ivory—and is only $8, you can’t beat it!" —Sarah Kinonen, associate beauty director

    Frequently Asked Questions

What should people look for when shopping for drugstore concealers?

When looking for a drugstore concealer, Rodriguez says you should know your goal before shopping. “Then, you can work backwards and find the concealer that is suited towards that,” they say. “For example, if you love a no-makeup-makeup look, Maybelline New York’s Instant Age Rewind has a more radiant finish,” so that might be a better choice than a thicker, full-coverage formula like the E.L.F 16HR Camo Concealer. If you like using your fingers to apply your product, Rodriguez says something waxy that needs a little warmth to blend in will be your best bet. It’s all about preference.

What is the best concealer option for mature skin?

Aside from CoverGirl’s Simply Ageless Triple Action Concealer, Rodriguez says Instant Age Rewind is one of their favorite formulas for mature clients because of how skin-like the formula is. “Mature skin thrives with radiant, light-reflecting formulas that bounce light off of the skin,” they say. “A drier, more matte formula is going to make mature skin appear more creasy, since mature skin already tends to struggle with dullness and lack of vibrancy.” Rodriguez adds that you want to avoid layering too much product, as it will sink into creases and make the skin look heavy, especially since mature skin is naturally thinner. “Work in light layers, tapping where you want coverage and allowing the concealer to set before applying more.”

The formula combines 7% glycolic acid and 0.5% salicylic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin, unclog pores, and help reduce keratosis pilaris, rough texture, ingrown hairs, body breakouts, and the list goes on. To balance out the acids, it’s also infused with hydrating shea butter to help soften skin and prevent irritation.

Why it’s worth it: Married to your body lotion? One use of Byoma’s Smoothing Body Serum might have you rethinking the relationship. Chicago-based dermatologist Kristen Lee, MD, previously told Allure that succinic acid—it’s included in this formula—has exfoliative properties, in addition to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. It’s also powered by a Barrier Lipid Complex (including ceramides) to strengthen and restore your skin barrier, plus blue tansy to calm redness and irritation. This multitasking formula hydrates and tackles rough patches, body acne, keratosis pilaris, and uneven texture on your arms and legs.

The texture is lightweight and sinks in fast, making it the perfect post-shower step to keep skin smooth, clear, and bright all day. Bonus: It’s safe for sensitive skin types, something you don’t always get with acid-powered formulas.

“When I first started reading reviews, a lot of people praised the smoothing, quick-drying formula of Byoma's Smoothing Body Serum, but complained about the scent. I agree with the first part, but totally disagree on the second. To me, it smells like a hotel spa in the best way. It actually lingers on the skin, and I catch soft whiffs of it throughout the day—it’s like a little hit of calm. The texture is super lightweight but still gives me that clean, fresh glow. Why it's worth it: New York City-based board-certified dermatologist David Kim, MD, is a fan of CeraVe’s SA Lotion (and the matching SA Body Wash) because it pairs gentle exfoliation with deep hydration, a.k.a. salicylic and lactic acids with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. While Dr. Kim points out that CeraVe doesn’t disclose the exact percentage of salicylic acid—so it may be milder than some of the more targeted treatments on this list—it still makes a solid choice for everyday use. Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), is oil-soluble (a.k.a. oil-loving), which Dr. Kim explains makes it especially effective at clearing excess oil and keeping pores clean. And unlike some body lotions that can feel heavy or clog pores, this one is lightweight and nongreasy, making it an ideal companion to stronger acne-fighting products.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is body acne?

Body acne arises from "the inconvenient and unfortunate cycle of clogged pores, inflammation, and poor skin turnover," says Dr. Prather. She explains that back acne can appear as small blackheads, inflammatory pustules, or sometimes deep, tender cystic lesions.

What's the best way to treat body acne?

To start, Dr. Prather encourages her patients to identify anything that might be triggering outbreaks. "Hair products such as conditioners or leave-in products that contain silicones and oils can leave a residue on your skin, resulting in clogged pores and acne," she notes. "Screen your products for ingredients that are known to be comedogenic, and when getting a massage, opt for lighter lotions in place of heavy creams and massage oils that can exacerbate acne."

After eliminating potential triggers, look for over-the-counter treatments that target body acne—just don’t treat your back like your face. “Although our back skin seems tough, it [usually] cannot handle the same acne treatment routines we use on our face,” warns Dr. Prather. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that back acne is often more sensitive due to a weaker skin barrier and microbial imbalances, especially when combined with harsh cleansers. “This discrepancy may lead to a vicious cycle in which the natural lipid barrier of the back is compromised, promoting further oil production and microbial imbalance,” explains New York-based board-certified dermatologist Kseniya Kobets, MD. She recommends a gentler approach: pH-balanced cleansers with humectants like glycerin, followed by a lightweight, non-comedogenic lotion with ceramides and niacinamide. Another tip? Use actives like benzoyl peroxide sparingly (no more than a few times a week and ideally over moisturizer).

Dark underarms are extremely common, but if they’re keeping you from going sleeveless, the best armpit brightening creams can help. Discoloration often stems from friction, shaving, ingrown hairs, or product buildup, which can lead to irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The trick is to use strategic, dermatologist-approved ingredients to fade discoloration, soothe irritation, and smooth bumpy texture, all while being gentle enough for the delicate underarm area.

“When recommending brightening skin-care products for the underarms, I prioritize formulas that balance efficacy with gentleness,” says Sarah Sung, MD, a board-certified dermatologist of The Perq, based in Seattle. “Since this area is prone to friction and irritation, using well-tolerated ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, and kojic acid is key to avoid further post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.” She emphasizes that consistency is crucial, especially when treating discoloration from shaving or ingrown hairs, and that the best results come from products that are easy to use daily and feel good on the skin.

Luckily, several over-the-counter options fit the bill: Lightweight, hydrating formulas that won’t sting or pill under deodorant and are suitable for all skin types. Below, you’ll find expert- and editor-approved favorites that deliver brightening results.

Why it’s worth it: Though it’s technically a face serum, Brendan Camp, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, shouts out La Roche-Posay’s Mela B3 Dark Spot Corrector Serum for its skin-brightening formulation that can be used on your underarm area. “This niacinamide-containing serum can be applied to underarms to treat discoloration, though it would be wise to do a test spot first before applying it more liberally,” he advises.

Rachel Nazarian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, also gives the Mela B3 serum kudos for its “multi-angled approach” to creating an even skin tone, thanks to La Roche-Posay’s proprietary Melasyl complex, which is rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and retinol. It’s also enriched with moisture-replenishing thermal spring water to minimize skin irritation.

Why it’s worth it: Topicals Faded Brightening & Clearing Serum is a gentle, yet highly effective treatment for fading stubborn underarm discoloration, whether from acne, ingrown hairs, or hyperpigmentation. “This creamy, gel-serum contains a combination of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, kojic acid, alpha arbutin, and azelaic acid, which in tandem visibly fade excess pigmentation while also calming inflammation in the area,” says Dr. Sung. Together, these ingredients help interrupt melanin production and reduce pigment transfer in the skin to even out tone—even for those with deeper skin tones—without irritating sensitive areas. “Many of my patients appreciate that they can apply it at night or in the morning without any stickiness,” she says. “Over time, they notice not only brighter underarms but also fewer ingrown-related bumps from waxing or shaving thanks to the serum’s anti-inflammatory benefits.”

Because niacinamide is both a pigment inhibitor and an anti-inflammatory, it not only helps reduce hyperpigmentation but also soothes redness or irritation from shaving. Dr. Sung also points to the addition of panthenol and prickly pear extract, which help boost hydration and reinforce the skin barrier, crucial for minimizing friction-related irritation and preventing further darkening.

Why it’s worth it: AmLactin’s Daily Nourish Body Lotion is a 2024 Allure Best of Beauty Award winner—as well as a dermatologist's favorite for treating everything from bumpy arms to dark underarms. “This is my go-to recommendation to help lessen the appearance of underarm hyperpigmentation,” says Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Plymouth Meeting Dermatology, based in East Norriton, PA. “It’s formulated with lactic acid, both a hydrator and a gentle exfoliant that works well to remove dead, darker skin cells and fade hyperpigmentation on sensitive underarm skin.” The 12% lactic acid concentration is potent, but the addition of glycerin helps offset irritation by keeping skin moisturized. Dr. Saedi recommends applying it nightly to damp skin right after showering and before deodorant. “Patience and consistency are important. It typically takes a couple of months to see results,” she adds.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What causes underarm discoloration?

There are a multitude of factors that lead to underarm discoloration, but the most common cause is skin friction, according to the board-certified dermatologists we talked to. “Constant friction between the skin or with tight clothing can cause hyperpigmentation due to the irritation it causes,” says Mina Amin, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Los Angeles. “This condition, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), is a result of an increase in melanin production as the skin responds to inflammation.”

Another cause can actually be your current underarm care routine. According to Dr. Camp, the deodorant or antiperspirant you’re currently using can lead to irritation or an allergic rash. “A reaction to a deodorant or antiperspirant can cause contact dermatitis, which can result in discoloration,” he says. Another discoloration-inducing tool in your pit regimen is your razor. “Irritation as a result of shaving can cause inflammation in the underarms, which leads to hyperpigmentation as it heals,” says Dr. Camp.

There are also medical conditions, like acanthosis nigricans, which can lead to underarm hyperpigmentation. “This condition can result in dark and thickened skin, typically in body folds such as the armpits, neck, and groin,” says Dr. Amin. “Acanthosis nigricans is often associated with insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. High insulin levels trigger skin cells to reproduce more rapidly, leading to dark thickened plaques.”

How can you minimize underarm discoloration?

Good news: There are quite a few over-the-counter avenues you can take to improve your pits’ skin tone. “Several skin-care ingredients can help reduce underarm hyperpigmentation by lightening dark patches and promoting even skin tone,” says Dr. Amin. The best armpit brightening cream will contain retinol or exfoliating acids, such as glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acids, for their brightening properties.

“Regular exfoliation combined with brightening agents can help improve the appearance of underarm hyperpigmentation over time,” she says. However, when using active ingredients like exfoliating acids and retinol, Dr. Amin says it’s important to introduce them gradually and, if you’re exposing skin during daylight hours, always follow up with sunscreen, as they can increase photosensitivity.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How are Korean body-care products different from American ones?

Korean body-care products usually use fewer butters and oils than American ones, and the scents tend to be much more subtle, Chung Park says.

Body care is also more deeply rooted in Korean culture than American culture. Koreans have a long history of frequenting public bath houses, like mogyoktang and jjimjilbang, and using a rough exfoliating washcloth daily, Chung Park explains. “That history is reflected in modern K-Beauty body products with lightweight body serums, mists, and lotions, as well as gentle body scrubs.”

It’s no surprise that some of the best Korean skin care, especially body products, are continuously trending on TikTok, with fans praising their elegant textures and skin-first approach. Many of these finds hail from skin-care brands known for their minimalist formulas and sensitive-skin-friendly ingredients, helping to redefine what body care can look like.
